Lighting Up Your Campsite
You never really understand what dark is until you are out in the woods and you can't see your hand in front of your face. This can make basic functions, such as walking and changing clothes somewhat difficult.
Flashlights have come a long ways. Many double as small lanterns as well. You can also get battery-operated lanterns instead of fuel-operated lanterns. These are great, but be sure you have fresh batteries that are charged when you leave home and bring spare batteries just in case. If your site has electricity, then you have many options such as desk lamps, clamp on work lights and even standing construction lights. Without electricity, don't despair, as there are a few options for you as well.
The classic camping lantern has been updated as well. They still look old-fashioned, but many burn on "Coleman" fuel. These use pumped up pressure and all you have to do is turn the knob and light with a butane lighter or match. They are much easier to use than old-fashioned lanterns and the fuel is easily found. There are also propane lights available as well.
If you need a trail of light, there are several poles that you can purchase. These are designed to allow you to hang your lanterns high to produce a wide stream of light. There are also specialized brackets that hold the lantern on a tree, but away from the bark. Lanterns do have a hiss that you will have to get used to. This is because of the pressurized gas that the lantern is emitting.
If you want quiet light, you can use oil lamps as well as candles. A glass globe around a candle will help to brighten your light and these are great for tables. You can also store unused candles in a tin for later use.
If you are going to be walking or hiking around at night, a headlamp is ideal. These are also great if you need to carry things or cook in the dark. You can also pitch your tent or read a book with your hand free.
Don't worry if you don't have any of these special lights as a beginner. The more you camp, the better you will be able to figure out what are must haves. You can simply begin
camping
with whatever flashlights you have and bring extra batteries just in case.
Enjoy your camping trip and lighting up your campsite.
